What is catering? Catering is cooking for people anytime anywhere. The first thing to realize when going into the catering business is that it is a lot of work! I myself am still working at getting my catering business up and running the way I like it and I've been in business for over a year.
The very first thing you want to do is find out what your local health department requirements are. Most states do not allow cooking out of one's home. A professional kitchen is required. After you get your health department licenses, you'll want to get you business name certified, a state sales tax license, a city sales tax license, and talk to an insurance agent about getting liability insurance. The last thing you want it someone sueing you over undercooked chicken or something terrible like that.
Next, get out there and promote yourself. A lot of businesses today like to purchase boxed lunches for employess. That is a huge market. There are weddings, graduations, funerals, business luncheons, church luncheons, birthday parties........the possibilities for catering events are endless.
